Six of the best from junior star Nakeno

Young runners Nakeno Creighton and Jordan Bascome are shaping up to be stars of the future after finishing first in their age groups in this year’s KPMG Junior Road Race Series.

Creighton won all six of his series races in the 8-10 age group in a season when few runners managed to complete all of the events, and at times he outpaced boys in older categories.

And Bascome proved to be a worthy winner in the same age group for girls, triumphing in both the Flying Colours Round the Town Race and the Eye Institute 5K.

Rebecca Heyliger, Jazmine Outerbridge, Winton Woodley, Dage Minors, and Shawn Herman all came through as winners in the older age groups.

Woodley, one of this year KPMG Front Street mile champions, competed in a closely-fought battle for first place in the boys’ 11-12 group against younger rival Minors. Both accumulated the same number of points and as such will share this year’s KPMG trophy.

Outerbridge made running in her 11-12 category look easy as she won every race she entered, proving herself on the track at the Pacers meet as well as over longer distances.

In her absence, Rachel Fox scooped up two first places at the relocated IAS and Park race and also the Flying Colours race. Fox’s strong showing this season saw her take second place in the 11-12 group.

The 8-10 girls’ events saw Kyrah Scraders dominate as she broke the KPMG record for the Botanical Gardens race in January. She went on to also win the Pacers event and the IAS & Park race, but failed to qualify for the series by completing the minimum four runs. Kayla Corday took second and Aaliyah Nolan third.

In the 13-15 boys’ category, Herman, who won his age group in the Fairmont to Fairmont race and the Round the Town 5K, narrowly edged out triathlete Brighton Swan to win by a mere five points. Ryan Gunn, who completed all six series races, was third.

Elsewhere, Heyliger won four out of the six races to score the maximum 200 points that gave her the number one position in her age group.

The only race she conceded was the Eye Institute 5K in St. George’s, which was won by Carys Pinches.

Sarah Maybury and the Eberly sisters, Myrtia and Michaela, were also prize winners in this group.
