Bascome delighted as ISL gets off to a flying start
After much fanfare and a flurry of pre-season publicity, the Island Soccer League finally got going at the National Sports Centre this week with between 200 to 300 spectators turning up on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
As predicted by ISL commissioner David Bascome, the action on the specially designed six-a-side pitch was fast-paced and eventful — with a total of 32 goals banged in from the boots of 28 different players over the course of four games.
And Bascome said yesterday he hoped the competition would continue to grow as the summer progresses.
“I was certainly very happy with what I saw — there were plenty of goals, some of the games were really exciting and I think the people in the stands really got their money’s worth,” he said.
“We’re always looking at ways in which to improve things and one of the issues I know about is that it can sometimes be difficult for people to turn out on a week night, so we’re looking into the possibility of scheduling more games at the weekend.
“From my perspective though I’m very excited because this league is about the rejuvenation of local football and the reaction of the players in particular has been very positive.
“One player came up to me the other night and told me that this league had actually saved his life, which was obviously a wonderful thing to hear when you’ve put so much time and effort into getting the league off the ground.
“As time goes by I’d like to see more people in the stands but right now, whatever I have to do to keep this league going I will do because I’ve got 120 players who are as excited as I am about the ISL.”
