Sims self-destructs again
The increasingly infamous "Michael Sims blow-up" happened again on the Nationwide Tour yesterday as Bermuda golf's number one shot a disappointing four-over par 76 at the $600,000 Melwood Prince George's County Open in Maryland.
Having made the turn — after starting the day on the back nine — at a promising one-under on the 7,067-yard par-72 course at the Woodmore Country Club in Mitchelville, Sims recorded consecutive bogeys on the par-four third and fourth holes before turning in a disastrous triple-bogey eight on the par-five eighth.
A score of 76, which included three birdies and four bogeys to go along with the triple, left theTour rookie towards the bottom of the pile and up against it once again in terms of making the weekend cut.
His lacklustre first round came on the back of a horrible moment of misfortune last week at the BMW Pro-Am Charity Classic in South Carolina when Sims incurred a two-stroke penalty for hitting the wrong ball when seemingly on course to make the cut.
In ten events so far this season, the 2005 Bermuda Open champion has made just two cuts and earned under $3,000 in prize money. Consistency has been an elusive quality for the Island's best golfer, with one outstanding sub-par round almost invariably followed by a high number which has sent him plummeting down the leaderboard.
