Richardson to challenge for BCB top job

Allen Richardson has signalled his intention to run for the presidency of Bermuda Cricket Board after resigning from the executive committee yesterday.

The now former BCB vice-president will join another former Board member Keith Wainwright in challenging Reggie Pearman for local cricket's top job at the AGM — the date of which has yet to be finalised.

Rumours had been swirling for several weeks that Richardson, who works in Government's Department of Training and Employment, was intent on throwing his hat into the ring while there are still others, including women's national team coach Allan Douglas, who are also thought to be contemplating a leadership bid.

And while Pearman himself has not gone on the record yet as to whether he wishes to carry on, Board sources have told The Royal Gazette that the president is keen to fulfil another term in office — particularly now that he looks to have fully recovered from the heart operation he underwent last November.

In the meantime, it is not yet clear whether the Board will fill the post left vacant by Richardson's departure, which they are entitled to do under the bye-laws if an executive member resigns before their term in office is complete.

Pressed on this yesterday, BCB secretary Marc Wetherhill said they would certainly be on the lookout for a "qualified candidate" to take up the vice-president position before the AGM — but only if there was a realistic chance of that individual remaining there for the long term.
