Cann's heroics guide Islanders to victory
St.George’s CC 147 and 132
St.David’s CC 233 and 47-5
World Cup veteran Lionel Cann slammed 87 off just 33 balls and then seized four for 24 to lead visiting St.David’s to a comfortable five-wicket win over neighbours St.George’s at Wellington Oval.
Batting at number eight, the Islanders’ player/coach put the St.George’s attack to the sword, sharing in a 93-run seventh-wicket stand with Arthur Pitcher jr (21) as the visitors seized early control of the match.
Cann hit two fours and 12 sixes, including five in succession off veteran left-arm spinner Eugene (Calabash) Foggo, but fell 13 runs short of a maiden century for the season.
St.George’s won the toss and elected to bat but soon found themselves in an uncomfortable position after openers Oronde Bascome (nine) and Rodney Trott (27) were removed.
Assistant national coach and veteran all-rounder Herbie Bascome (57) and newcomer Trevor Forth (25) added 55 for the sixth wicket to provide temporary stability to the home team’s innings. But St.David’s regained the upper hand once the pair were dismissed with off-spinner Del Hollis leading the way with impressive figures of two for 33 off 16.5 overs.
St.David’s got off to a flyer in reply with openers Fiqre Crockwell (34) and Chris Foggo (13) producing 52 runs for the first wicket, before losing three quick wickets without any addition to the total.
Shannon Raynor (19) and OJ Pitcher (29) put the Islanders back on course via a 45 run fifth-wicket partnership before the mercurial Cann provided the fireworks later down the order to give his team an 86-run first innings cushion when stumps were drawn on Saturday evening.
Herbie Bascome claimed excellent figures of four for eight off 16 overs including four maidens to spearhead the Cup Match champions’ attack.
St.George’s began their second innings just before the close of first day’s play and suffered a further setback when overnight watchman Foggo was dismissed in the final over of the evening session.
Resuming yesterday morning the home team were further pegged back trying to erase first innings arrears, again lacking application at the crease with only skipper Ryan Steede offering resistance with a responsible top knock of 42.
Cann then ripped through the hosts’ order with the ball to cap off a superb all round performance before St.David’s nearly let it all slip away by losing five wickets in pursuit of a paltry 46 runs for victory as St.George’s battled to the end.
Budding off spinner Trott claimed four for five off five overs with one maiden to lead a St.George’s attack that continues to struggle in the absence of injured strike bowler Gregg Foggo.
Leg Trappers 96 and 161
Devonshire Rec. 210-8 and 51-2
With opening batsman Ricardo Brangman hammering 83 on Saturday and bowlers Jodie Maronie and Dennis Williams each taking three wickets on the same day, home side Devonshire Rec. were able to coast to a comfortable eight-wicket win over Leg Trappers in this First Division two-day clash at Devonshire.
Batting first, Trappers found the going tough against a lively Devonshire attack which was inspired by a few early wickets — the first five Trappers’ batsmen fell with just 33 runs on the board.
Maronie did the early damage by taking the first three while Dean Stephens got the other two.
Trappers fought back with Dwayne Webber and Mike Duffield putting on 37 for the sixth wicket but once the latter was out it was all downhill as they were dimissed in 33 overs.
Maronie finished with three for 33 off 11 overs with three maidens while Williams had three for a mere six runs off six overs with two maidens. Stephens chipped in with two for 20 off nine overs with three maidens.
The home side had little difficulty passing their opponents’ total with Bangman falling short of his century after reaching 83, a brisk knock that saw him strike 11 fours and two sixes. He and opening partner Jeremy Fray put on 61 with Fray finishing on 20.
Brangman and number three bat Ian Armstrong (39) added 84 for the second wicket, taking the total to 145 which eventually enabled them to declare at 210. Also among the runs were Derrick Brangman on 30 not out and Lamont Brangman on 19.
Spinner Webber was the leading bowler for Trappers with four for 88 off 13 overs while Henry Hanekon returned two for 18 off seven overs.
With a first innings deficit of 114, Trappers avoided an innings defeat by reaching 161 after losing their first two wickets for nine runs.
Saleem Mukuddem was high bat with 30 while Allan Day and Hanekon each struck 27 and James Oosthizen 20.
Maronie again grabbed three wickets, this time giving up 45 runs from 12 overs with two maidens while Stephens claimed three for 19 off 12 overs with four maidens. Lamont Brangman snatched two for 11 off seven overs with three maidens.
In their chase after a winning target of 48, Devonshire coasted to victory in 12.1 overs, losing two wickets along the way. Stephens was top bat on 19 not out while opener Jeremy Fray struck 16 and Ian Armstrong 11 not out.
