Scott takes top honours

Cyclist Wayne Scott will be representing Bermuda at the Island Games next month and his role will be to help team-mate Geri Mewett retain the road race title that he won at the last Games.

However, it was Scott's turn to taste victory on Sunday when, perhaps unexpectedly, he won the sports National Time Trial Championships, beating out arguably the Island's best-ever rider at the discipline that pits individual riders against the clock, former multi-National and Caribbean Time Trial Champion Kris Hedges.

Evergreen veteran Greg Hopkins, 53, called on all his experience to secure third place. Kent Richardson and Ricky Sousa jr rounded out the top five.

Sixty riders descended the starting ramp in extremely difficult conditions, with the senior riders having to complete the 24-mile course which offered tremendous challenges with 30-knot winds that saw them battling everything from brutal headwinds, technically challenging crosswinds, and fierce tailwinds that propelled them like a bullet from a gun before turning at the start/finish line to go through it all again over the seven-lap course.

At the finish line it was like a battle zone, as riders crossed the line happy to have survived the conditions. Reigning Caribbean Time Trial Champion Hedges, who won the National Sprint Triathlon last weekend, has not been seen on the bike much this year, as he has been concentrating on running.

Scott was clearly happy to secure a deserved victory over Hedges, something he admitted he had always wanted to achieve in a time-trial. His time of 55:45.38 was eleven seconds better than Hedges in 55:56.33 with Hopkins just six seconds back in 56:03.08

In the Intermediate category Mark Lombardi took honours in 60:55.43 beating out Marcelino Ferreira, competing in his first event since breaking his collar bone six weeks ago who was timed in 61:31.73 with Glen Franklin third in 62:44.85.

In the Men's Novice category Steve Petty was first in 66:17.50, follwoed by Jeff Amaral (69:50) and Duncan Scott (70:06.69).

Ashley Robinson was the only female Open entry and was timed in 74:12.18.

Heather Cooper (77:51.75), and Sarah Jordan (88:10.52) were the top female Novice riders, with Philip Woolridge (68:47.10) taking the junior 15/16 title.

Perhaps the toughest challenge came for the youngest and lightest competitors who, despite riding shorter distances were blown all over the course fight bravely to the finish line.

Nathan Amaral won the boys 13/14, Mark Godfrey the boys 11/12, and Sophie Adams won the girls 13/14 with Izabella Arnold second. Molly Pilgrim, Elizabeth Jordan and Gabriella Arnold were the top three in the competitive girls 11/12 category, Nicole Amaral took honours in the girls 10 and under beating out Kate Page and Courtney Day and Daniel Oatley, Justin Ferreira and Conor Outerbridge were the top three 10 and under boys.
