Memorial match
A memorial cricket match commemorating the achievements of two of Somerset’s most cherished sons will be played today at Somerset Cricket Club — a match which will double as an official Cup Match trial and feature local stars such as Dwayne Leverock and Janeiro Tucker.
The Neville Roberts/Mackie Simmons Memorial Trophy game is now in its second year and, according to Simmons’ grandson Leon Raynor, was created to honour the memory of two former Cup Match captains whose contribution to the Somerset community both on and off the cricket field was “immense”.
“My poppa and Mr. Roberts were legends in the Somerset community — both former Cup Match captains and excellent cricketers in their own right,” he said.
“They both made a huge number of sacrifices for other people and the betterment of everyone. It should be an excellent game at Somerset Cricket Club and I’d like to urge as many people as possible to come out and support it in memory of two great men.”
