Teen golfer's drugs riddle
Teenage golfer Tariqah Walikraam will not be travelling with the rest of the Island Games team to Rhodes today after she was dropped for allegedly refusing to take a drugs test.
Bermuda Golf Association president Bob Legere said yesterday the 18-year-old had failed to turn up for several appointments which were made for her and ultimately declined to take the test when issued with an ultimatum.
But when contacted yesterday, Walikraam disputed the BGA’s version of events.
“I never refused to take the test,” she said. “They left messages at my job a few times but never asked me to call them back and then last Friday I got a call from a woman saying I had to come in to take the test or I couldn’t go to the Island Games. I wasn’t able to make it because I was working.”
Earlier Legere said: “We at the BGA are 100 percent committed to the rules laid down by the Bermuda Drugs Council. So when we’re faced with an individual who says they are not prepared to take the test, our response is ‘I’m sorry, we can no longer include you on the team’.
“A number of appointments were made for Tariqah. There were various different excuses given as to why she couldn’t make them and it got to the point that we had to take action.”
Veteran Katyna Rabain will take Walikraam’s place.
