Khano heralds his 'best season ever'

Khano Smit: Has cemented a starting berth with the Revs.

New England Revolution’s Khano Smith has proclaimed this MLS season as the best of his blossoming career after becoming a permanent fixture in the table-topping team.

The Bermuda international has featured in all but one match for the Revs who are perched at the top of the Eastern Conference ahead of Red Bull New York.

Smith, 25, played a starring role in their 3-0 demolition of Toronto FC at the weekend, orchestrating their final goal, and is hoping to cap off his promising campaign with some silverware.

A plague of injuries had threatened to de-rail his MLS progress but the former Dandy Town striker believes he has got his career back on track and with plenty more to come.

“We have been struggling at home recently so beating Toronto was an important result for us,” he said. “I was pleased with my performance and assist so I am content with that.

“It lifts us back on top of the Eastern Conference and we’ve a few games in hand on some of our rivals so we’re in a healthy position.”

“I missed the first game of the season but have started every game since which I’m delighted about, particular considering I missed a lot of football last year.

“But I can’t afford to be complacent because I know if I let up someone one will come in and take my place. “I feel this season can be my best ever in football. I had some successful years in Bermuda but you can’t compare the domestic game with the MLS.” The Warwick born wide-man has been deployed in an unfamiliar left-wing-back role this season, despite being used primarily as an attacker for both his country and former club.

But under the stewardship of former Liverpool legend Steve Nicol and former Arsenal striker Paul Mariner he believes his game has come on leaps and bounds.

“The level is so much higher and I really feel my game has developed as a result,” said Smith. “I used to be an out-and-out striker but now I’m playing as a left-wing back I have attended another dimension to my game.

“Playing under Steve Nicol and Paul Mariner has been an excellent education for me - it’s far easier to listen to guys who have been there and done it. It’s about time Revs won something now because we’ve come close over the last few seasons.”

The Revs are next in action on Saturday at CD Chivas USA and Smith is expecting a tough encounter: “They’re in the play-off picture and it won’t be an easy match - but hopefully we can secure another victory.”

Last season the Revs lost the MLS Cup to Houston Dynamo 4-3 on penalty-kicks after the game ended scoreless in regulation and one period of overtime.
