National team selectors are set to unveil a new-look cricket squad within the next ten days which will embark on a lengthy overseas tour in early August — a tour that will now include games against Denmark as well as Holland and Ireland.

For the past few months, anybody interested in representing Bermuda has been training under national coach Gus Logie at the Sports Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings — with the Trinidadian making no secret of his disappointment at the distinctly average turn-out from the World Cup players who did not announce their retirements after the tournament.

Speaking to The Royal Gazette this week, Logie said he had been told to expect perhaps two one-day games in Denmark before a variety of One-Day Internationals and Intercontinental Cup games in both Holland and Ireland.

Bermuda Cricket Board chief executive Neil Speight is currently in London attending the International Cricket Council’s annual conference and Logie said he expected the selectors to get together soon after he returns early next week to start discussing the potential make-up of the Island’s first post-World Cup squad.

“Things will really start to move forward when Neil gets back from London,” he said.

“I’ve said it before but the turn-out at training from many of the players who were involved in the World Cup has been pretty poor. They are obviously no longer under contract with the Board and are free to do as they choose, and a lot of them have said that they want to spend more time with their families.

“Even still their attendance overall has been a little bit disappointing, but on on the plus side the attendance from many players who didn’t make it into the World Cup squad has been very good and there are a core group of players showing up every week who have been working very hard and are knocking on the door for selection.”

Meanwhile, The Gazette>understands that the identity of the BCB’s new director of cricket development is likely to be revealed in the very near future — probably before the end of the week.

Former St. George’s Cup Match skipper Wendell Smith stepped down from the post two months ago for what the Board have persistently described as “personal reasons” and it is understood they have made a decision as to who will replace him after considering a number of applications that were submitted.

National team skipper Irving Romaine initially expressed an interest in the role, although it is understood he ultimately decided not to put himself forward because of his many anticipated commitments as national team skipper.
