Football heralds its trusty Steede
It has certainly been a week to remember for Kwame Steede, who capped off captaining the Hogges to their first ever victory by winning the Bermuda Football Association’s MVP for the 2006-7 season.
Steede beat off competition from Hogges team-mate Ralph Bean of North Village and Devonshire Colts’ Aljame Zuill to scoop the prestigious award at last night’s ceremony.
The 26-year-old, who skippered his side to the Premier Division title, celebrated his accolade with Cougars’ Shawn Smith who won coach of the year and Arkeita Smith of the Devonshire Lady Cougars.
“I’d like to thank the Devonshire Cougars for this award,” said Steede, who lead the Hogges to a 2-1 victory over New Hampshire Phantoms on Monday night.
“If wasn’t for the coaches and my team-mates I wouldn’t be accepting this trophy. In football you get out what you put in and the Cougars trained harder than anybody else — that’s why we won the title. We sowed and we reaped — it was a great season for us.
“It’s the first time I have won this award and I’m very proud to join the list of decorated names that have gone before me.
“You could say it’s been a pretty good week for me after captaining the Bermuda Hogges to their first ever victory and now winning the MVP. “It’s always special when you achieve in football and I’m thrilled to receive this award considering I was up against two good players in Aljame Zuill and Ralph Bean.”
The sixth edition of the BFA awards, held at the North Pavilion at the National Sports Centre, recognised some of the Island’s finest footballers for their outstanding contributions last season.
Awards were presented to the male and female player of the year, outstanding coach of the year, referee of the year, most improved referee of the year, young male and female player of the year, leading goal-scorer, best defender, best goalkeeper and to the male and female fair play teams.
Among those present at the ceremony were former English Premiership strikers Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne.
A special tribute was paid to former PHC Zebra’s striker Marischal (MOP) Astwood, whose funeral was yesterday, and fellow Zebra’s and Devonshire Colts man James Parsons. Both men died recently aged 56.
The MVP female award went to Arkeita Smith of the Devonshire Lady Cougars, while Ralph Bean picked up the award for the Premiership’s top goalscorer.
Fellow Hogges players Timmy Figureido and Sean Simmons won the goalkeeper and defender awards respectively.
