Young Men's Social Club sends 52 youths to football camp
Around 52 youngsters are in New Jersey for a ten-day international football training camp designed to provide them with exposure to overseas football environments and culture.
The camp is structured for half-day sessions, which will also allow the players to focus on football in the morning and expand their horizons in the afternoon and evenings, attending several attractions in the Tri-State area.
Ranging from ages eight to 14, they're primarily apart of the Young Men's Social Club (YMSC) youth programme and raised the funds through various methods over the months, including corporate and private sponsorship.
More than 20 counsellors and coaches are accompanying the group, being hosted by United Soccer Academy in Basking Ridge.
YMSC executive director Melody Parris, said: "This trip is the third overseas trip for the 'Set the Target, Meet the Goal' soccer camp.
"And, in 2005, a group attended a camp in North Carolina as well as in 2006, another in Reading, Pennsylvania.
"Most importantly the team will have fun. Each year the players benefit from the various philosophies, styles and tips of this wonderful game we call football.
"Through qualified coaches, they learn life skills, team-building, timekeeping, respect as well as structure.
"We are hoping to develop ties for future scholarships and also invite overseas teams to Bermuda."
The YMSC is known throughout the community for its unique development curriculum that not only focuses on after school sports, but also a heavy emphasis on tutoring and academics by qualified teachers.
