Basketball players going for gold in Rhodes
Bermuda’s undefeated women’s basketball team continue their gold medal quest today when they take on Prince Edward Islands in the semi-finals of the Island Games.
The in-form outfit have won all three of their Group A games, topping the table, and face PEI at the Ventoklio Indoor Hall.
Following a light training session yesterday, coach Richard North said the players were confident following their 64-44 victory over the Cayman Islands — the 2005 Island Games Champions — earlier in the week.
“The team was happy we demonstrated a number of scoring options through Lyndsay Garrett, Jenaya Wade Fray and Erica Woods,” he said.
“It will be a difficult game as the PEI’s team is mainly geared around their university squad but we’re looking healthy and looking forward the competition.”
Meanwhile the men’s team also advanced to the semi-finals after overcoming Cayman Islands 85-61 yesterday. They will now take on host nation Rhodes tonight.
John Beard, Chairman of the Island Games Association, said the people of Rhodes were flocking in their droves to watch the basketball matches.
“Greek people have two sporting loves football and basketball and the atmosphere at the games have been excellent. The men’s team take on Rhodes later and that should be a real spectacle.
“They will have the home advantage but the men’s team have been playing well with Sullivan Phillips and Chris Crumpler in great form.”
It wasn’t a day to remember for Bermuda’s men and women’s football teams though who both crashed out of the semi-finals. Kenny Thompson’s Under-23 men’s team lost 2-0 to Gibraltar, while the women’s side were dismantled 5-0 by the Prince of Edward Islands.
Both teams will do battle for bronze in today’s play-offs.The women’s volleyball team booked their place in the semi-finals against the Faroe Islands after defeating Greenland 3-1.
There were more medals in the pool yesterday with Bermuda having to settle for their third successive silver in a relay race. On this occasion is was in the 4X100 metre freestyle final, but Eleanor Gardner, Nicole Yearwood, Lara Loescher and Ashley Aitken could console themselves with the knowledge that they set a new national record with a time of four minutes, 6.60 seconds.
Aitken also continued her own impressive form in the individual races by winning a bronze in the women’s 50 metre freestyle with Loescher finishing in fourth place.

She entered the day in first place but her 83 leaves her with a total of 233, three strokes off the leader. Yana Ballantyne is currently in seventh place after her 85. She has a total of 251.
