Honours shared at St. George's

St. George’s Dinghy and Sports Club hosted fitted dinghy racing on Sunday with honours evenly distributed as Contest won the first race, Challenger the second and Victory the third.

In the opening race for the BAA Cup, sailed in a steady breeze of 11-13 knots, three of the four boats flew their number three rigs while>Challenger suited up with the larger number two rig.

At the endVictory, who had come on strong in the final minutes, was close to taking the win but was held off at the finish line by Contest. Elizabeth claimed third while Challenger struggled home in fourth.

Race Two for the Whitney Cup was started with all boats now using the safer number three rigs and it was Challenger who jumped way out in front by sailing to the extreme right hand side of the course on the first beat.

Slowly, however, Contest chipped away at the leader’s advantage and at the last windward mark the boats were within a boat length of each other.

But Contest chose to perform a gybe-set at the mark while Challenger extended with a bear-away set down the final run. This advantage was enough to hold on for the victory.

Contest placed second followed by Victory while Elizabeth sank at the leeward mark.

The final race for the Hurst Cup saw those boats heading to the left of the course on the first windward beat gaining a huge advantage as the wind shifted to their side.

Contest was lagging behind in a distant fourth at the top mark with Challenger and Victory way out in front having sailed the left side. Ultimately it was Victory who took the win, closely followed by Challenger.Contest claimed third with Elizabeth coming home last.

Overall standings for the Coronation Cup now see Contest 30, Victory with 22 Challenger with 20 and Elizabeth bringing up the rear with 15.

The next race day will be in Granaway Deep on July 22 with racing at 12 noon, 1.30 and 3 p.m.
