Dear Sir,
Before going much further, I must declare my interest as an avid fan of cricket, which will have some influence on the following statement. I have attempted to maintain some level of objectivity.
Cricket has come under a huge microscope over the past several years and I accept that this is part and parcel of receiving a bundle of cash from the Government of Bermuda, as well as other sponsors. The fact that the team didn’t perform as well as we would have liked, on and off the field, has provided your newspaper and others with cannon fodder. And rightfully so — IN SOME CASES.
That being said, I find it disturbing that the same level of scrutiny is not given to football. The fact that the sport was provided with a windfall to the tune of $5 million more than cricket, one would have thought that your newspaper would have provided at least the same level of scrutiny.
Case in point: the Bermuda Football Association send a well-prepared team to the Island Games (if one were to believe the comments made in your paper by their coach Kenny Thompson) and return empty-handed.
Now, up until this year I didn’t know that this competition even existed and so I did my research and came to the conclusion that this is a competition for minnows. Ok, maybe that’s a little harsh, but clearly we aren’t talking about world-beaters here. To add insult to injury, our boys lost to islands that I have never known to be football countries and in one case, the Western islands, I didn’t even know existed.
Yet, this story is buried as part of a tournament wrap-up! What’s that all about? If that had been our cricket team, it would have been front page news.
So the question begs: are you anti-cricket? Or are you pro Kenny Thompson and football? From where I sit, football failed miserably at the Island Games and so did Thompson and your coverage was incomplete.
