Cellar-dwellers Hogges striving for first away win

The Bermuda Hogges are back in action tonight on their ten-day tour of US, taking on fellow USL Division Two strugglers the Cincinnati Kings.

Kyle Lightbourne’s men are currently rooted to the bottom of the table with only four points from 11 games — five points away from the New Hampshire Phantoms and six from Cincinnati.

But the Hogges picked up their first point of the season during an ill-tempered 1-1 draw with tonight’s opponents in May and have a realistic chance of securing their first away win of the season — with tonight’s clash promising to be just as fiery as the first.

Tonight’s game will be played on the astroturf of the Kings and Country Sports Complex, as was their match last week against the Cleveland City Stars which they lost 2-0.

The synthetic surface has not been greeted with the approval of all the players, according to Hogges co-owner Shaun Goater.

“The game against Cleveland City Stars was the first time our players have played a professional match on artificial grass and it was certainly a bit of an eye-opener for a few of them,” Goater told The Mid-Ocean News.

“I wouldn’t say it had a major bearing on the result but it did take us quite some time to get to grips with the surface

The defensive frailties that have plagued their entire campaign were on display again last week in Cleveland.

That game, however, was against the league’s third-placed team and always promised to be an uphill to task for the Hogges, who were then looking to build on their inaugural victory against New Hampshire Phantoms two weeks ago at the National Sports Centre.
