Fisher forced to fight
Two former Fed Cup players, Liz Hartley and Sasha Fisher, battled through the humidity and lengthy rallies, before Fisher emerged with victory in Ladies A singles action at the Argus Open, played at the WER Joell Stadium.
Fisher won the first set 6-2 but tired in the second set as she stayed well behind the baseline from where she eked out a 7-5 win.
In ladies’ doubles, youngsters Cayla Cross and Jacklyn Lambert outfought Zoe Fisher and Shawnette Wilson to take a well deserved 7-6, 6-3 victory.
Gavin Manders and Roger Marshall, meanwhile, were ousted by the younger and hungrier pair of MacKenzie Bean and David Thomas.
Manders and Marshall both struggled with their serves and with their game peppered with unforced errors, it was Bean and Thomas who took the match 7-6, 6-4.
In the Men’s Open doubles, veteran Stuart Smith and Jovan Whitter had to play late into the night against the Jamaican team of Tyler Chin and Yussef Migoto before the visiting pair clinched a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
