Collins hopes Medici will be okay for final
Annabelle Collins hopes her horse will be back on song when they perform together to the music of Stevie Wonder in the dressage final at the Pan-Am Games.
The Barcelona-based Bermudian qualified for the individual intermediate dressage final yesterday despite Medici, a Westfalen Stallion, being out of sorts and riding sluggishly.
But despite expressing concerns about Medici’s drop in form, Collins remains upbeat after achieving her pre-tournament brief of qualifying for the final.
“Medici felt tired and a bit sluggish yesterday and it can be quite hard work when a stallion feels like that,” she said.
“But the most important thing was to get through to the final — but it’s fair to say things could have gone a little better.
“Medici was superb on Saturday and I couldn’t have been more happy with him. Hopefully he’ll back on top form tomorrow.
“To be fair, he has been doing a lot of training and travelling and it’s probably taken its toll on him.
“We will do a little bit of work with him today and give him some rest and then he should be right for the final.”
The final requires complicated movements to the accompaniment of music with Collins selected an instrumental melody from the songs of seminal artist Stevie Wonder.
“I’m really looking forward to the final as I love the freestyle round — I’m a big Stevie Wonder fan and adore his songs so it should be fun. It was important for me to qualify for the final — that was my original goal and I really enjoy dressage to music so I’m really pleased.
“I don’t really think too much about positioning and scoring. I just aim to go out there and enjoy myself and see where I end up.”
The top 15 competitors from yesterday’s individual second qualifier go into the final that will also be staged at the National Equestrian Centre, in the Deodoro Sports Complex.
The venue in Rio’s military village has 180 stables; a figure that in the future can be increased to up to 250, which would accredit it for competitions in Olympic Games.
Its cross-country track has been designed by the same architect responsible for building the track that will be used in London during the Olympic Games.
