Bermuda Under 19s slumped to their third loss in five matches at the Sir Gary Sobers International Schools Tournament in Barbados yesterday.

The Island’s youngsters suffered a six-wicket defeat at the Wayne Daniels Field in St. Phillip at the expense of a powerful BCL Juniors team led by off-spinner James Phillips and left-handed opening batsman Samuel Gitters.

Phillips proved to be a real thorn in the Bermudian’s side by claiming three for 15, while opener Gitters stroked a fluent 33 off 59 balls and along with number three bat Nick Carter (27) added 64 runs during a secon -wicket partnership that kept the Bajans well on course for victory.

And even after both batsmen were dismissed in the space of one over to momentarily revive Bermudian hopes, the Bajans would not be denied as Alfred Greenidge (20 not out) and Jeshia Rollins (11 not out) put up the shutters and added another crucial 31 runs during an unbroken fifth-wicket stand that carried the West Indians across the threshold to victory with 54 balls to spare.

Off-spinner Tamari Tucker was the pick of the Bermuda bowling with two for 19, while skipper Rodney Trott seized one for 37 and seamer Malachi Jones one for 11 off four overs respectively.

Earlier, Bermuda’s middle order bats wilted under the pressure of a very disciplined Bajan attack after the visitors elected to bat on another good strip.

Openers Stephen Bremar jr (12) and Terryn Fray (seven) started promisingly by adding 20 runs for the first -wicket before the latter was run out in the eighth over to trigger a slide.

Bermuda’s batting woes in the middle were then brutally exposed as the likes of Malachi Jones (0) and Maurico Bassett (0) both went cheaply to place added pressure on their colleagues further down the order.

That Bermuda were able to surpass the century mark owed much to skipper skipper Trott and Bremar who led the visitor’s resistance by adding 38 runs for the fourth-wicket.

For the second match in succession St. George’s Cup Match player Trott curbed his aggressive instincts and played with a straight bat, gathering 27 off 49 balls during a subdued knock containing only two boundaries while Bremar contributed 12.

Others managing double figures were Lamar Richardson (18 not out) and Jordan DeSilva who weighed in with an equally valuable 14 during a late flurry.

Bermuda Under 19s take on Xenon Academy today at Content Ground in St.Phillip, Barbados.
