Collins refuses to set herself targets

Ready for action Annabelle Collins will perform to the music of Stevie Wonder in the final today.

Annabelle Collins has refused to burden herself with positional targets ahead of today’s crunch dressage final — but admits her “fingers are crossed” for a faultless display.

Collins will be performing in the individual intermediate freestyle test at the National Equestrian Centre with podium places to be determined by the end of the day.

She had been earmarked as a potential Pan-Am medal hope for the Island, but Collins is simply hoping both her and her horse Medici can perform to their pinnacle.

The Barcelona-based Bermudian qualified for a place among the last 15 competitors in the individual 2nd qualifier on Monday, finishing 12th with an overall score of 63.750.

Despite securing her date in the dressage final Collins had admitted to having concerns about Medici — a Westfalen Stallion — who delivered an uncharacteristically tired display.

But she has refused to get “uptight” and will be hoping “everything’s alright” when the pair perform to the music of Stevie Wonder after an encouraging training session yesterday.

“I spent yesterday morning preparing with my horse, making sure we’ve done all we can going into the final,” she said.

“He was excellent in training and felt very good to ride so I’m feeling confident about everything going ok for us today.

“The freestyle is my favourite event and I’m very much looking forward to performing to Stevie Wonder — I’m a big fan of his music.

“We’ve done a sound check and everything was working fine so I have no worries or concerns ahead of my ride.

“I spent yesterday afternoon resting and relaxing after the morning training session and I now feel mentally prepared for a good performance.

“Fingers crossed it will be a good day for me — I’ve done everything possible to ensure it will be and I’m delighted to be in the final. I never set myself targets and just look to well and see where I end up.” Collins had finished 10th in the individual 1st qualifier at the weekend with an overall score of 65.000.

Equastrian runs in the family for Collins; her brother Tim competed in the grueling Three-Day event competition of dressage, cross-country and showjumping at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He finished 36th out of 75 riders. Chrisopher Hickey and Lauren Sammis of the USA as well as Tom Dvorak from Canada go into today’s event at the National Equastrian Centre as favourites.

The stadium, in the Deodoro Sports Complex, is in the heart of a military village - the Vila Militar in the West section of Rio de Janeiro.

It is the biggest military concentration in Latin America with more than 60,000 men based there.

The equestrian eventing and jumping will also be hosted in the Deodoro Sports Complex centre, which has 180 stables.
