Durham named captain
Somerset yesterday officially confirmed Hasan Durham ast their captain for this year’s Cup Match against St. George’s at the Wellington Oval on August 2 and 3.
It had been widely expected Durham would get the nod as skipper to succeed all-rounder Janeiro Tucker, who was stripped as the West End club look to give the responsibility to players who represent them in league action.
A club statement read: “We believe that we have an experienced leader in Hasan, who has joined SCC this season in the Premier League. Jacobi Robinson, captain of the SCC Premier League team will be the vice-captain. SCC has embarked on a vision of developing captains from its’ talent pool in the west end. The combination of Hasan and Jacobi as captain and vice-captain respectively, fits into the vision of the club.
“We believe that the entire team, officials, members and fans will rally around Hasan and Jacobi. They are certainly very capable leaders.
“In Hasan we have a seasoned and disciplined leader, while, in Jacobi, we get the developmental glimpses of what it takes to lead a team in Bermuda’s pinnacle of cricket events.”
The recent speculation over who would lead SCC for this year’s Annual Classic has finally been put to rest. Somerset insist they never intended or set out to cause any embarrassment, discomfort or ill-feelings toward Tucker.
Club President Richard Scott said: “Janeiro is a member of Somerset and is a highly regarded cricketer in the country.
“Janeiro is first a person and when an individual is offended because of the actions taken by SCC, where possible, we endeavour to make amends and improve in those areas which will ultimately lead to us being a better institution.
“I want to make it very clear that Janeiro being replaced as Cup Match Captain has no connection with anything negative.
“This is an initiative of the club and we believe this year presents the opportune moment.”
