Gordon in Corfu
Caitlin Gordon followed up her competition in the Island Games in Rhodes, Greece by competing in the Corfu Cup ITF event last week.
The tournament attracted some of the best junior tennis players in Europe. Youngsters from Serbia, Uzbekistan, Austria, Germany, Spain, Italy, Romania, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Greece, Finland, Sweden and Hungary were all there competing.
Both the boys and girls singles events had full qualifying events prior to the main draw. Caitlin Gordon gained entry directly to main draw for singles on the basis of her current ranking and was seeded eight.
Gordon lost to Labrini Pasnakoglou from Greece in the opening round and was disappointed in her performance, playing on artificial grass for the first time.
The competition was played in searing heat — with the temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius in the middle of the day.
Gordon partnered Lisa Reichmann from Austria in the doubles and the pair enjoyed a successful run in the competition — eventually losing last Friday evening in the semi-finals to the Austrian team of Fostner and Koll in two tie break sets 7-6,7-6.
The match featured some fine doubles play from both sides with powerful exchanges and aggressive play at the net. Gordon anchored her partner well by maintaining long cross court exchanges as each side pressed the other in an effort to find an opening. There were few unforced errors from either side and the difference, in the final analysis, was a faltering service game under pressure during the tie breakers from Reichman.
Gordon returns to Bermuda briefly before setting off to compete in the St Lucia ITF at the beginning of August.
