Squash team are going for glory

Ready for action: Bermuda's junior squash players are heading to the British Virgin Islands.

The largest ever contingent of Bermuda junior squash players are keyed up for action in the British Virgin Islands where they are competing in the annual Junior CASA Tournament being held from July 20-29.

A total of 17 youngsters have made the trip, led by national team coach Denise Sommers and manager Jane Maycock.

The boys team includes our two current Caribbean title holders from 2006, Robert Maycock (Under-17 champion), and Noah Browne (Under-13 champion).

Both have now moved up an age group and will find the going much tougher as younger players in their respective groups, although Maycock is ranked 3-4 in Under-19, and Browne is ranked 3-4 in Under-15.

Squash spokesman Roger Sherratt said: “Right now we have tremendous enthusiasm in our junior squash programme and this is no doubt due in great measure to our youngsters being exposed to watching the world’s top professional players competing in the PSA Masters.

“We are allowed to send teams of four, plus four reserves, for each of the boys and girls team events, but we are also sending some additional players to compete in individual events in order to gain valuable experience at international level.

“It’s encouraging to have an abundance of talented young boys in Under-15, with Kristian Muldoon and Micah Franklin both seeded 3-4, Chris Stout and Noah Browne seeded in the 5-8 section, and Korin Knights and Jason Shrubb also competing.”

Teams competing in Junior CASA are Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, and OECS.
