Bermuda's women cricketers have an extra incentive to up their game — every wicket they take will raise money in the fight against breast cancer.

The national side has teamed up with BF&M Insurance Group for the project as it prepares for a series of World Cup qualifiers in Pakistan in November.

Each wicket the team grabs in the American Women's Championship, in Toronto, in August, will trigger a $25 donation from BF&M to Bermuda TB Cancer and Health Association's scheme to buy digital mammography equipment worth more than $1 million.

The women have recently completed an intensive training programme managed by Ann Browne-John, ICC representative of the Americas and former captain and coach of Trinidad and the West Indies women's team.

Team captain and opening bowler Chevonne Furbert said: "Breast cancer is out there and anything that can be done to help raise awareness of it or tackle it has got to be positive. We'll have to get as many wickets as we can."

BF&M president and CEO John Wight said: "We are delighted to continue supporting the Bermuda Cricket Board and the women's national cricket team's attempt to make local cricket history while working to raise awareness and assist a cause that is very dear to us.

"I look forward to following what I hope will be Bermuda's next World Cup cricket stars, the women's national team, stump out their opponents while simultaneously bowling out breast cancer one wicket at a time."

Bermuda Cricket Board president Reginald Pearman said: "Breast cancer affects the lives of many and it is fitting for the women's squad to be involved in raising funds for such a cause.

"We wish them the best of luck in the run up to the qualifiers and look forward to them taking many wickets to assist this worthy cause."

Judy Panchaud-White, chairwoman of the cancer charity, said: "Creating a future without breast cancer takes determination. We are sincerely grateful to the BF&M and women's national cricket team for helping us take a step closer to this reality.

"Through their generosity and support, every dollar raised will be used to deliver on our promise of caring for the community.

"Breast cancer touches an average of 90 lives every year in Bermuda. That's 90 families whose lives are turned upside down by this disease. However, with this creative collaboration and generosity by our community, we are determined to make a difference."
