Mixed fortunes for young squash players
By the end of Day two Bermuda’s juniors have chalked up some notable victories and a few tough losses in individual competition of the Caribbean Junior Squash Championships in the British Virgin Islands.
In the boys Under-19 division Robert Maycock, last years Under 17 champion won his first two matches in fine style to progress to the semi-finals.
He tackled the number two seed last night, but the result was not through by Press time.
In the same division Scott West won a very tough first round match 3-2 but lost out in the second round.
Meanwhile, Laura Robinson in girls’ Under-19 division cruised through her first round and she faces the top seed in her next match.
Bermuda’s girls in Under-17 division, Alex Furtado, Kelly Barnes and Juliette McCoomb, all lost their first round matches — but Barnes’ sister Rachel had an impressive first round win in the Girls Under-15 before losing to a highly-rated young Guyanese girl.
The Island has a lot of depth in the boys’ Under-15 division, with Kristian Muldoon and Micah Franklin both winning through to the semi-finals while Chris Stout and Noah Browne won their first round matches but lost in the quarter-finals.
In the same age division, Korin Knights notched up his first win in international competition in the consolation round.
Two of Bermuda’s other first timers in the competition, Beckett Simmons and D’Vario Thompson in boys’ Under-13, lost their first round matches, but young Simmons went on to win a really exciting marathon five-game scrap in boys’ Under-13 consolation — much to the delight of his team-mates.
And our youngest player, 11-year-old Emma Keane won her first round match in girls’ Under-13.
Teams competing in Junior CASA are Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, and OECS.
