Spring has a golden moment
Matthew Spring of Bermuda Pacers grabbed gold at the recent Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational track and field meet while a dozen athletes from Bermuda Flyers Track Club returned from the same competition with nine medals.
Spring took top honours in the 1500 metres final in which Flyers’ Darico Clarke placed sixth, having earlier won his heat.
The annual meet awards the top six athletes in each event with medals.
Flyers’ Darrion Simons, completing an impressive season on the track, advanced to the finals of the 200 metres, placing fifth overall with a personal best time.
Shuntae Hendrickson continued her successful first year with the Flyers following a bout of chicken pox, finishing fourth in the 800 metres while also advancing to the finals of the 400 metres in which she placed sixth.
Dage Minors, meanwhile, finished fourth in the 1500 metres and sixth in the 800 metres.
Ashley Berry placed sixth in both the 3000 metres and 1500 metres. Paul Simons jr, Flyers’ youngest athlete, ran a PB to place fourth in the 9-10 boys’ 1500 metres while Jyair Trott and Kenya Thompson both advanced to the semi-finals of the 200 metres.
Trott and Darrion Simons also advanced to the semi-finals of the 100 metres.
