On-form squash kids are in semis

Bermuda's boys' team enjoyed a fine start on the first day of the team event at the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships being held in the British Virgin Islands this week.

Scheduled to play two matches in one day - against the OECS (Organisation of Caribbean States) and the Bahamas ¿ Bermuda won both, automatically qualifying for the semi-finals.

The team of Beckett Simmons (Under-13), Kristian Muldoon (Under-15), Micah Franklin (Under-17) and Robert Maycock, Chris Stout and Noah Browne (all Under-19) won their matches, despite the fact that Franklin and Stout usually play in the Under-15 division.

Maycock had the toughest match against the OECS but after losing his first two games against a difficult opponent, he bounced back to take the third 9-8 and then cruised through the next two, losing just two points, as he wrapped up the match.

Simmons gave the Island team a great start against the Bahamas, winning a marathon encounter 9-7 in the fifth.

Muldoon (walkover), Maycock and Browne also recorded wins with the only loss being suffered by

Franklin who had to move up an age division to Under-17 and went down 3-1.

Bermuda then lost to Trinidad and Tobago in another qualifying match but had already earned their berth in the team semis.

Meanwhile, the Bermuda girls went down 4-1 to Guiana. Captain Laura Robinson (Under-19) played superbly to win her match against Guiana's number one but all of her team-mates suffered losses.

However, the girls then rebounded to crush Jamaica 5-0, and like the boys, earned a place in the semi-finals.

Robinson and Alex Furtado (Under-19) along with Emma Keane (Under-13) won comfortably but Kelly and Rachel Barnes both endured epic contests, before securing victory in the fifth and final game.

Those results mean that both Bermuda teams are guaranteed a top four place in the annual championships.
