Douglas and Dill in charge

Top local umpires Roger Dill and Steven Douglas were confirmed yesterday as the two men designated to stand in the middle to officiate this year's Cup Match at Wellington Oval.

Another local umpire, Richard Austin, has been appointed third official with former West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd returning as match referee.

Dill and Douglas come highly recommended. Dill currently serves on the ICC's Americas Region Elite and Associate and Affiliate International Umpires Panels, while Douglas was recently appointed to the Americas Region Elite Panel.

In recent years Dill has umpired in official ODIs in Europe, Africa, Canada and in the Caribbean and has also previously worked with legendary cricketer Lloyd on several occasions.

"I've always enjoyed working with Clive and have learned a lot from him," Dill said. "It's good to see Bermudian umpires appointed to do Cup Match this year. And I hope people will come and enjoy the game."

Dill last officiated in Cup Match at Wellington Oval in 2003 and Douglas at Somerset Cricket Club in 2004.

Lloyd, who served as match referee during Bermuda's inaugural ODI against Canada at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad in 2006, arrived on the Island yesterday.

"I thought Cup Match was played in a good spirit last year and hopefully the same will happen this year.

The people come to watch exciting cricket and enjoy the match and I'm sure this year will be no exception if the weather holds. Bermuda is a very beautiful place and it's always wonderful to come here," said Lloyd, who compiled 7,500 Test runs at an average of 46.67.

The Guyanese national also gave local umpire Dill a ringing endorsement.

"Roger is a good man and a very good umpire and I am sure he's going make steady progress," he said. "He has the right temperament and it will be great to see him again."

Dill and Lloyd also officiated in Bermuda's first ODI against a Test-playing nation (Bangladesh) in Antigua last February.

Lloyd also applauded former Cleveland opening batsman Douglas' recent appointment to the Americas Region Elite Panel.

"This shows that Bermudian umpires are making steady progress, which is good," the larger than life Lloyd acknowledged.
