I hope Leeds can return to their glory years

Leeds fans must have been rejoicing last weekend when they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup at Old Trafford. It was great to see Leeds win because for the past four years or so they have really suffered. In fact they had not won at Old Trafford since the early 1980s.

Just cast your mind back to the early part of this decade and the 1990s and Leeds were riding high.

In fact during both the 1990s and early 2000s Leeds were one of England's top clubs and were competing in Europe. They reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and the Champions League in consecutive seasons before suffering very bad financial difficulties. And when that happens you have to sell your best players which the club did. They were then relegated from the Premier League and then a few years later went down to League One from the Championship.

I am now hoping that this victory over United will see them start that long climb back up. In fact they are at the top of League One and will be banking on getting back to the Championship and who knows ¿ perhaps we will see them grace the Premier League before long.

Before going down Leeds had such players like Jonathan Woodgate, Lee Bowyer, Nigel Martyn, Robbie Fowler, Robbie Keane and Harry Kewell. They were all sold when it became apparent how bad the finances were. That should be a warning to all clubs.

The Leeds I remember were the side managed by Don Revie in the 1960s and '70s. Back then Leeds were always around the top of the table and they won two League Championships and the FA Cup.

When you played Leeds you knew it. Getting in the bath after a game with them you saw the bruises they inflicted ¿ they were tough games! They had such players as Cooper, Gray, Bremner, Clarke and Giles.

Leeds' hero last weekend ¿ Jermaine Beckford ¿ showed that he is a very good player and now says he wants to leave the club. But he should not rush into doing something he may regret.

One thing about Leeds no matter what division they are in is that they have always had a very loyal and big following. They brought about 9,000 fans to Old Trafford last weekend and you certainly heard them as Leeds became the first team to knock United out in the third round of the FA Cup since Bournemouth in 1984.

The FA Cup is always very special for me and I imagine many other fans. Younger ones today may all look to the Champions League but the FA Cup is something different. There is always a special feeling ¿ a big of magic ¿ about it and when you see what Leeds did then you can understand why.

Now Leeds will have to face Spurs in the next round and who knows what will happen. One thing is for sure ¿ Harry Redknapp will not be taking them lightly.

A number of games this week ¿ including the semi-finals of the Carling Cup ¿ were postponed because of the freezing weather in the UK. While most clubs in the top flight have underground heating, it was the danger posed to the fans getting to and from the grounds which caused the games to be postponed. Hopefully this weekend it will get better.

But I suppose for those clubs who have some injured players who have taken a knock, the rest would have been welcomed.

We could see the return of Arsenal great Patrick Vieira soon as he was undergoing a medical at Manchester City this week. I can understand why City manager Roberto Mancini wants Vieira as the French player was with him at Inter Milan. He knows him and knows what he can do and I think City's midfield needs strengthening. And Vieira is just the kind of player who can do that. Of course he will have to adjust to playing the speed of the game in the UK as opposed to Italy where he has been for a while now but he will get with it very quickly. Just look at what he did at Arsenal.

Vieira also wants to improve his chances of playing with France at the World Cup and for that he needs to be playing on a regular basis ¿ something he has not been doing with Inter.

LA Galaxy star David Beckham returned to AC Milan this week for their match against Genoa who they crushed 5-1. Beckham looked good and despite his age seemed quite fit which is something you would expect from him.

Now Milan will have him on the right and Ronaldinho on the left and the Brazilian is looking like he did when he was World Player of the Year a few years ago.

He was fantastic and like Vieira, Ronaldinho is looking to play in the World Cup this summer. He seems a lot fitter than he was a couple of years ago. He knows what he has to do and appears to be taking care of himself.

Another player who is also keeping an eye on the World Cup is top American striker Landon Donovan from the LA Galaxy who just joined Everton on loan. It is going to be interesting to see how he makes out in the Premier League. He has played abroad before in Germany but without much success. But he could really help Everton out since they are without Ayegbeni Yakubu, who is at the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria and Victor Anichebe, who has been injured. And then there is Louis Saha ¿ a fantastic striker but who also suffers from injury.

Donovan could make his debut for Everton against Arsenal on Saturday. That is a baptism by fire!
