BGA revive West against East contest

There used to be a time in the dim and distant past when it wasn't just Cup Match that pitted the East and West ends of the Island against each other.

Golfers too used to battle it out in an annual clash between the two sides in an inter-parish tournament called the Romay Trophy.

It was a fiercely contested affair where bragging rights were once again at stake, and the players fought hard to prove their parish had the best golfers on the Island.

The contest slipped into obscurity but the Bermuda Golf Association have revived the occasion, and so this August, East and West will meet once again to battle it out at Port Royal Golf Course.

There will be team captains, team colours, and 36 players a side, with ladies, juniors and men selected from a broad range of handicaps, although according to the BGA the initial idea is to make it a more mid-handicap event.

Bermuda Amateur Match Play champion Jarryd Dillas will lead the West End, while Camiko Smith will take charge of the East End team for the 20 point two-ball better-ball system, where two players from the East will play against two players from the West, for 20 points. The points from each two-ball partnership will be added up and the team with the most points will be the winners.

At the same time 12 local professionals, and the top 12 amateurs will go head to head for the Bermuda Cup, in a Ryder Cup style contest with one point per match at stake, and the winning post being six-and-a-half points.

Both events are due to take place on the same day at Port Royal in what the BGA hope will become a regular event on the Island's golfing calendar.

Anyone interested in playing in the Romay Trophy should register their interest with Scott Roy at the BGA, email scott.roy@bermudagolf.org">scott.roy@bermudagolf.org, or call 295-9972.
