BFA to investigate bottle throwing
Bermuda Football Association (BFA) have confirmed they are investigating the bottle-throwing incident that marred the First Division match between St.David’s and BAA at BAA Field earlier this week.
Referee Wendy Woodley brought Tuesday night’s game to a premature end after a glass bottle was thrown onto the pitch by a St.David’s supporter in the closing stages of the match. No one was hurt during the incident.
BFA general secretary David Sabir said the referee’s report would be “reviewed and addressed” by the association.
“The association is aware that the match was abandoned by the referee after a bottle was thrown on to the field of play,” said Sabir. “The person or persons responsible for throwing the bottle have not been identified.
“The referee’s report will be reviewed and addressed appropriately by the association.”
Sabir is now urging football spectators to show respect to players and match officials and warned anti-social behaviour would not be tolerated at games.
“The association wishes to remind spectators attending games that this sort of negative behaviour only seeks to undermine the efforts of the teams competing on the field,” he said.
“Additionally, in a time when the community is concerned regarding the anti-social behaviour impacting our Island it is incumbent upon the football family to respect the values of fair play towards their own team players, their opponents, the match officials, the club premises and property and, above all else, the other spectators who paid to come and watch an entire game of football.
“Actions such as throwing objects on to the field of play, using foul and abusive language, damaging property among other actions only seeks to undermine the improvements in the game of football that we all say we desire so desperately.”
St. David’s had been beating BAA 4-0 when the bottle was hurled onto the pitch with around five minutes to go. It is not yet known whether the result will stand.
