A deserved first final for a very young team
First Division outfit X Roads Warriors qualified for a first ever domestic cup final at Somerset Cricket Club on Tuesday night when they edged by Wolves to set up a Shield final date with Paget at the National Sports Centre in March.
But what makes Warriors? historical achievement all the more significant is the fact they have only been competing among Bermuda Football Association (BFA) ranks for the past 18 months.
Tuesday?s win was also sweet revenge for X Roads against a Wolves side that pipped them on goal difference for the fourth and final Dudley Eve Champions Cup spot last December. Wolves went on to win the festive tournament.
?From our very inception our goals have always been to pursue perfection in the sport and improve ourselves overall from a social aspect,? X Roads coach Saleem Talbot explained.
?And we?ve only just begun.?
Talbot actually had to leave Tuesday night?s match with his charges trailing 1-0 to Wolves at the half to tend to urgent family matters, leaving former national coach Gary Darrell ? who has been discreetly assisting the club behind the scenes ? in charge.
?Gary believes in excellence and now I think the players are also starting to believe in themselves both on and off the field as well,? Talbot added.
X Roads were first represented at the youth level just over a decade ago before they entered a team in the BFA First Division at the conclusion of the 2002-03 season.
The fledgling club struggled in their inaugural season, finishing eighth in the ten-team standings and currently lie in sixth place in the table this campaign.
?We?ve given away a lot of stuff but mathematically we are still in the hunt,? Talbot said.
?The First Division has been very competitive this season and it?s just a matter of us waiting to see what happens.
?But the guys are very enthusiastic and happy with the result and looking forward to the final. And I think anybody would agree that we deserved that result and really should?ve scored more.
?But we are very grateful for what we have and never take anything or any team for granted. This has all been a team effort and I can only give praises to God for what we have achieved and look forward to the future.
?The guys have really worked hard and are now beginning to see the fruits of their labour and there were many young men who went before this team that also put in a lot of work. And hopefully these young men will be just as much a credit to their families as well in terms of a sense of achievement and productivity.
?Hopefully they can now use this achievement in their lives which is very important. Otherwise they will have learned nothing. This is what X Roads is all about and where we are coming from. . . . helping to develop well rounded citizens through football.?
