Ali versus Foreman in Bermuda?

It might sound the stuff of fantasy, however, Vlad Warton is deadly serious.

Admittedly the Ali and Foreman in question are not Muhammad and George, rather Laila and Freeda - the boxing daughters of the famous pugilists. But Warton, president of Millennium Events, is confident they will prove a knockout draw nonetheless.

Warton is on the Island for this weekend's world title bout between Lisa Brown and Leona Brown - the first ever held in Bermuda.

He believes the Island is crying out for top class boxing and is confident of packing the CedarBridge Academy Gym on Saturday night.

If he gets the 2,000 or so crowd he is anticipating he says he will not hesitate to hold further events on the Island.

"It's an idea I had that I have discussed with (local entrepreneur) Choy Aming," Warton said of his grand plan. "I think it's something that is extremely realistic, depending on how successful this event is this weekend.

"In the event that she comes here I was saying to Choy that it would be great to have Laila - who has already fought (Joe) Frazier's daughter - fight (George) Foreman's daughter. She is very keen to fight Laila."

Warton said a fight such as that would command a global TV audience.

"If we did that we would obviously beam the pay-per-view from here to the rest of the world," he said.

But why Bermuda? After all CedarBridge is no Caesar's Palace or Madison Square Garden.

"It is my third visit here. I came over about a year ago with Choy and he was very interested in bringing boxing here and told me about the die-hard fans," said Warton. "It is a beautiful Island with very friendly, hospitable people who love boxing. We appreciate people who love boxing and that's the main reason we are here. We want to show them some of the best boxers in their divisions and I think once people have seen this we can look forward to having an ongoing association with Bermuda."

The venue and date for the opening fight night, dubbed Fistic Fury, has had to be changed at short notice, but Warton says the move from BAA Field to CedarBridge will not have a detrimental effect on the predicted fireworks.

"The situation is that we were always intending to go outdoors but this being the rainy season, even though it is sunny at the moment, I was a little bit concerned because we are expecting a big turnout on the night and I didn't want it to be a washout," he said.

"In view of that we have had a look at a very nice location, Cedarbridge Academy. It is an indoor facility, it has all the lighting, all the seating, all the facilities that we require and I think that will take the risk element out of the equation.

"I would like to think we will get a couple of thousand people, but in this game it is always an unknown factor. One thing I can say for certain is that it is my belief that this is the biggest promotion ever to happen on the shores of Bermuda and I am very privileged to be here and to be associated with the promotion."
