All even between netball All-Stars
It was even stevens between the East and West in Saturday's All-Star netball matches.
Two of the four games were each won by the West and the East in the annual Bermuda School Sports Federation tournament. The East triumphed first, retaining the Primary Schools' title in a 15-5 blow-out of the West.
However, the West Enders bounced back, taking the Middle Schools' trophy in a tight 13-11 finish before also triumphing in the Senior Schools' clash 19-14. The East restored the balance by winning the Bermuda Netball Association (BNA) All-Star Select game, routing the West 36-28.
In the Primary Schools' division, East MVP and goal attack Dominique Richardson and her shooting partner Zuri Phillips - both of Francis Patton - made their first six shots to take early control of the match. At half-time, the East were leading 10-1 and the game was virtually over. Kori Hypolite of Gilbert Institute was the West MVP.
The Middle Schools' battle was quite a different matter with the West being pursued all the way by the East. At the half, West were in front 7-4 but defending champions East got to within one goal in the second half as it looked to be any team's game.
In the end, West MVP Elenae Anderson and Antionay Tankard - both of Sandy Middle School - led West to the Middle Schools title for the first time. East centre and MVP Keishae Robinson also gave a sterling performance.
West also defended the Senior Schools' championship. Signalling their intentions from the start, West jumped to a three-goal lead as Berkeley student Kimmisha Perinchief was on fire.
East finally got into stride and, at the half, there was a mere two-goal difference (13-11). Both teams made adjustments during the break and in the second period continued trading baskets. West, however, managed to score three unanswered goals towards the end, thus clinching victory.
MVP for the winners was Latisha Perinchief of Berkeley while Antonia Mill of CBA was the East's MVP.
Some of the Island's best players put on a fine display in the BNA All-Star Select clash. The most interesting aspect of the match was a sisterly rivalry as Gaynelle Pace (East) was defending her younger sibling Bismillah Richardson (West MVP).
The teams exchanged goals throughout the first half with the East having a 17-14 lead at the interval. During the second segment, East shooter and MVP Gina Christopher demonstrated why she is among the league's best, making six straight shots. West closed the gap somewhat but Christopher was unstoppable, scoring from almost any angle and putting East's name on the trophy for the first time.
The award presentations were made by BNA President Debra Saltus and Bermuda Union of Teachers President and Vice-President, Anthony Wolfe and Joanne Adams, respectively.
The All-Star soccer matches for boys have been rescheduled for this Friday, starting at 5.30 p.m. at the National Sports Centre.
