All-rounder Oronde eyes national team call-up after memorable weekend

St.George?s Cricket Club opener Oronde Bascome joined an elite group of cricketers over the weekend.

The teenage right-handed batsman scored a first century (101) in top flight cricket against Western Stars in the first innings of the drawn Premier Division Two-Day contest at St.John?s Field and then fell just nine runs shy of a second ton in the second innings.

And if that wasn?t enough, Bascome, currently in his third year playing senior cricket, also returned impressive figures of four for 52 to cap off a memorable all-round performance on a weekend of cricket that produced four centuries in total.

?This is definitely my best personal achievement in cricket so far. I thought it was great to score my first century but to actually follow it up with 91 on the second day was outstanding.

?I?ve been waiting a long time to achieve something like this. However, my main goal remains to try and make the senior national cricket team,? Bascome told .

The 18-year-old Saltus Grammar School student cracked 13 fours and two sixes off 179 balls during his first innings knock of 101.

?It took a lot of time and concentration to achieve and in the beginning the wicket was still a bit damp and the ball was popping up all over the place. And so I had to battle through that also,? he added.

?But once the wicket had dried up and I had been in for awhile things got easier for me.?

Bascome is the son of two-time St.George?s Cup Match skipper Herbie Bascome, still widely considered as one of the Island?s top all-rounders, and is currently captain of Bermuda?s Under-19 national squad.

Not to be completely overshadowed by his son?s superb performances, veteran Herbie scored 58 runs off only 47 balls and then seized three wickets for 86 from a marathon 25 overs of seam, while Oronde also shone brightly with the ball.

?I just tried to keep the right line and wait for the batsmen to make mistakes,? the younger Bascome explained.

As far as his individual game is concerned, Oronde said he hoped to continue maintaining his focus out in the middle for longer periods.

?I definitely want to try and concentrate for longer periods of time. I have been just trying to keep myself in shape and remain focused,? he added.

Bascome also hopes to see the Island do well when the youth team compete in July?s Sir Gary Sobers Cricket Tournament in Barbados.

Last summer saw the budding all-rounder accompany Bermuda?s Under 19s on tours of Barbados and Canada.

And he also earned himself an invitation to train with the senior national team earlier this year, though at the time the multi-talented athlete was also committed to football.

As for his second innings dismissal which denied him a second straight century, Bascome explained: ?I guess I got a bit over anxious. I was just trying to get a single and I lost my head and didn?t keep my eye on the ball.

?But I have been told before that after you score a first century things become a bit easier. And I?m sure there?s plenty more to come.?
