Allison, Mocklow in final
Both a new men?s and women?s champion will be crowned in golf?s Amateur Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club today with two locals contesting the men?s final and two visitors the women?s final.
Port Royal club member Dave Allison meets former pro Anthony Mocklow in the men?s 36-hole showdown after both survived close semi-finals yesterday afternoon while Canadian Elise Brandt and Natasha Morgan of Wales will contest the ladies? final, also over 36 holes.
Allison, perhaps better known for his goalscoring exploits with Commercial League soccer side Lobster Pot, survived one of his toughest tests yesterday morning when he got by medallist Blake Marshall at the 19th, earning revenge for a previous defeat by the Mid Ocean Club member.
He then took on another member, George Hutchings, in the semi-final, running out a two and one winner.
Bermudian Mocklow, a former club professional who regained his amateur status and now lives in in England where he has qualified for this year?s English Amateur Championships, claimed his first major scalp yesterday morning when he ousted defending champion Arthur Jones two and one in the quarter-finals.
But in the afternoon?s semi-final he looked to be heading out as he trailed Jonathan Ingham by three holes at the 12th before rallying to win one-up on the 18th.
In the morning, Ingham had enjoyed a comfortable six and five victory over teenager Nick Jones in a match which saw the two sons of previous finalists do battle. Brendan (Bees) Ingham had been beaten by Eardley Jones in the 1971 final.
The other men?s quarter-final saw Hutchings defeat former Amateur Strokeplay champion Michael Tavares eight and six.
Yesterday?s women?s semi-finals provided less excitement as Brandt easily beat Katrin Burnie six and five, a day after Burnie had ousted the defending champion Ebonie Burgess.
Morgan, meanwhile, eased into the final without hitting a ball after opponent Courtnay Montgomery had to withdraw with a knee injury.
Both Brandt and Morgan are currently attending university in Florida.
Action begins this morning with the first 18 holes of the ladies? final due to tee off at 7.15 followed by the first round of the men?s final at 7.35.
