Argus action hotting up
Play in the Argus Open moved into the home stretch at the beginning of the week with only a handful of matches played. Both top seeds in the Ladies A section saw action with Ashley Brooks struggling to get past Eirian Jones 6-4, 6-4, while youth had its way in the clash between second seed Sasha Fisher and former champion Lavern Stowe with Fisher breezing to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
In other action Sam Maybury, the top seed in the Men's B division, made short work of Leslie Stowe, winning 6-0, 6-2 while Maybury's counterpart in the Ladies section, Catherine Cooke battled for almost two hours before wearing down Michelle Held, winning 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Romar Douglas, the hard-hitting, no nonsense gentle giant, was not so gentle when he took on Ron Ganzon on Court One, blazing his way to a straight sets victory 6-3, 6-4.
Samitha Ranaweera and Jacob Trott, seeded second behind Andy Bray and David Jenkins were almost embarrassed after playing around in their encounter with the willing, but not quite able, pair of Randy Burgess and Vaughn Burrows before scrambling through 6-0, 7-5.
It was such a meandering pace in the opening set when Ranaweera and Trott were having their way that they decided to slow things down and prolong the action in the second set. This almost proved their undoing as the unseeded pair of Burgess and Burrows, warmed up by now, showed their mettle and had the much vaunted pair scrambling to avoid a humiliating second set defeat.
