Astwood claims regatta hat-trick
More than three dozen boats took part in the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club Summer Regatta on Saturday, with tight racing in all the classes.
But the outstanding performance of the day came from Glenn Astwood, who not only won all three J105 races but led around every single mark of the course in each event.
In light and sometimes shifty southwest winds, John Thompson's Monkeyshines was first across the start line and quickly established what seemed like an unassailable lead. But Astwood had worked his way past him by the first windward mark and never looked back.
By the end of the day, Buddy Rego's Not Mine was in second followed by Monkeyshines and Joji, sailed by Derek Ratteray, following in fourth.
In the J24 fleet, Trevor Boyce sailed New Wave to two firsts and a second with Mike Lewis' Erin in second and Pete Ramsdale's Sadiiqi in third.
Cyclone, skippered by Bill Pollett, led the fleet for much of the first race, before allowing New Wave to sneak inside her near the leeward mark. But her second place finish in that race proved the best of the day and she came in fourth overall.
Racing was close among IODs with just two points separating the first four finishers. But Allan Powell skippered Solna II to a narrow victory over Penny Simmons' Ariel, followed closely by George Cubbon's Blitz and Craig Davis's Vrengen.
Christian Luthi took first place in the Etchells fleet with a pair of seconds and a first. Tim Patton led the first race by a huge margin but never managed to repeat the feat, with a second and then a third in the following races. Third place went to Martin Vezina, who finished with a flourish. Forced to return to the starting line after jumping the start gun, he clawed his way back through the fleet to end the day with an impressive first. He finished second overall.
Among the junior sailors, Martin Danilak and Leonard DeSilva took first place in the 420s, with Jonathan White and Matthew Middon second, and Reid Perinchief and Michael Ducannon in third. Joshua Greenslade took first place in the Advanced Optimists, followed by the twin brothers Jordan Saints and Jason Saints. Owen Seise topped the Green Fleet followed by Christopher Sposato and Kelsey Durham.
