Astwood stumps Rangers

Stephen Astwood eased any anxieties that the Trojans may have had after a poor start to the season with goals in each half to enable the west enders to capture their first Premier Division points of the season.

At Somerset CC yesterday their sequence of consecutive league defeats ended with this deserved victory, Astwood getting the first goal after 24 minutes and the second after 74 minutes.

After an even opening spell which saw hard-working David Outerbridge prominent in the middle for the home side and young Reggie Lowe making lots of headway down the right flank for Rangers, Astwood broke the deadlock with a blistering free kick from 25 yards that gave Dwayne (Streaker) Adams in the Rangers goal no chance.

The one-goal edge saw the Trojans come into the game with momentum, but forward Dion Stovell struck a shot wide from an angle15 yards out.

Rangers, with forwards Janeiro Tucker and Herbie Dillas always looking capable of unlocking the defence, struggled in a midfield which wasn?t capable of providing these two efficient players with the distribution they sought throughout the game.

As the duo watched stranded most of the game, the Trojans were able to recover from any build-up by their opponents and counter-attack with promising raids.

Astwood was unlucky after 42 minutes when his blast from 16 yards was slapped away by Adams as he fell to the ground and within 15 seconds of that raid skipper Karl Roberts headed just over the bar.

The Trojans continued to hold a slight edge when play re-started with Astwood heading Shawn Riley?s cross over from 12 yards when he should have done better and with the ever-menacing Rohaan Simons, a second goal always seemed inevitable.

An already stretched Rangers defence got a jolt after 65 minutes when centre-back Donnie Charles received a knock and had to be replaced and it wasn?t long before the second goal came from Dennis Brown?s team.

But before Astwood struck, substitute Stevie Burrows missed a sitter after receiving a cross from Simons he simply mis-hit the ball from eight yards ? watching in agony as it rolled into the arms of Adams.

However Astwood was to knock any competitiveness that Rangers had left out of them with his goal after 72 minutes, coming during a counter attack with the defence calling for off-side ? which referee Anthony Mouchette ignored ? and Astwood was on his merry way on a breakaway to steer the ball into the goal past the advancing Adams.

Adams did superbly to push away anther fierce shot from Astwood five minutes from time, but by then Trojans were coasting on their way to a well earned, but far from spectacular, victory.T.Figureido; A.Rahman, K.Roberts, I.Mallory, R.Scott; S.Morrisey (D.Swan, 68 min), D.Outerbridge, S.Riley; D.Stovell (S.Burrows, 60 min), S.Astwood, R.Simons (D.Blydon, 86 min).
