A host of Bermudian athletes have been busy qualifying for major regional and international meets.

Former Carifta gold medallist Michael Donawa - an 800-metre specialist - is among those headed to next month's Senior CAC Championships in The Bahamas. Others who have attained the meet standards in their respective events are Latroya Darrell (high jump), Arantxa King (long jump), Xavier James (100 metres) and high jumper Deon Brangman.

Donawa recently established a new personal best of one minute, 52.79 seconds in his pet event while running in four meets in California. This, as well as another clocking of 1:53.17, eclipsed his previous top mark of 1:53.56.

While concentrating on the CAC at present, Donawa is also closing in on the Commonwealth Games mark, currently being 1.72 seconds adrift of the required standard.

Meanwhile, overseas-based King - winner in the Under-17 long jump at this year's Carifta Games in Tobago - has been showcasing her talent on the track as well as in the sandpit.

The Bermudian posted 25.42 seconds in the 200 metres to finish second at the Hartford Public Open recently where she also won the long jump.

Her excellence in the latter event was highlighted by the fact that her gold-medal leap of 5.98 metres at Carifta was only seven centimetres short of the Commonwealth requirement.

King and her older sister Akilah have also qualified for the Junior Pan American Championships (for Under-20 athletes) to be held in Canada.

Akilah - a member of the Island's Junior CAC Championships squad last year - celebrated a new personal best in the 200 metres at the Ivy League Championships. She posted 24.59 seconds in the final and followed up last week with 24.82 at another meet at Princeton University.

Darrell, Brangman and Taijaun Talbot will also compete at the Junior Pan Ams while Darrell, Arantxa King and a few others are scheduled to go to the IAAF World Youth Championships in Morocco too.

The national athletics governing body, Bermuda Track and Field Association, will announce its delegations to all of these meets after this weekend's National Track and Field Championships at the National Sports Centre.

Meanwhile, national coach Gerry Swan has been appointed technical delegate for the Senior CAC Championships. He has already visited The Bahamas for discussions with organisers.
