Augustus goes fourth in US junior tourney
Local junior golfer Daniel Augustus performed remarkably at the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Daufuskie Island Resort Championship held in South Carolina last weekend.
In what proved to be his best showing thus far in the US, Augustus finished fourth in a field of 48 golfers at the Jack Nicklaus-designed 7,081 yard, par - 72 Melrose Golf Course.
After two days of tournament play, the Bermudian carded a ten-over par 154 to place just outside the top three finishers among the boys 16 to 18 division.
Augustus, 17, struggled during Saturday's opening round in the windy conditions, coming in at ten-over 82. But the International Junior Golf Academy student rebounded on the final day of play by carding an even-par 72.
American Kent Copeland clinched the boys 16 to 18 division.
Augustus, due to graduate in May with full honours, is currently on a Tucker's Point Golf Club scholarship.
"On the first day conditions were very tough," said the Cedarbridge Academy graduate. "It was really windy and the course was not easy. I really had to grind it out."
The Bermudian also struggled to get going with the putter.
"A lot of putts didn't drop for me," Augustus added. "But I was able to play better on the second day when the putts finally began to drop.
"This is the best I have performed so far and it was also my lowest round of golf."
Augustus' coach, former PGA Tour player Andy Hinson, also admired the manner in which his student managed to turn things around over the final 18 holes.
"Daniel has worked extremely hard on his game. His attitude has been great and he has been an absolute pleasure to work with," he said.
Augustus, who has already been approached by several top colleges in the US, is also a past Fecchio Cup and Bank of Bermuda Foundation International Junior Championship winner.
