Augustus shines in harsh conditions
Bermuda?s Daniel Augustus overcame a treacherous front nine at the Chateau Elan course in Braselton, Georgia last week to record his best finish of the season during the International Junior Golf Tournament sponsored Chateau Elan Championships.
The 19-year-old International Golf Academy student carded an 11-over-par 153 for the tournament to finish tied with Americans Matt Lawson, Tenzan Hashimoto, Jordan Frank and Maxwell Cohen for ninth-place among a highly-competitive field.
Augustus moved to within three shots of the leader at one stage of the 36-hole tournament, but ultimately fell off the pace.
The Bermudian rebounded from a bogey-plagued opening nine holes on an unforgiving front nine made all the more difficult by swirling winds and cooler conditions.
Augustus bogied the par-fours 13th, 14th and 17th and double bogied the par-five 15th. But a superb short game saw the teenager stage a remarkable fightback over the closing nine holes to come in at four-over for the round.
However, day two proved to be a case of as Augustus again struggled on the front nine, falling a further seven shots behind to move to 11-over ? before staging another fightback over the closing holes to finish a respectable ninth.
?I struggled both days on the front nine which was actually the back nine. We played the back nine holes first on both days and the back nine really wasn?t a nine you wanted to start on. It was just that difficult and on the last day of the tournament the wind was blowing very hard,? Augustus said.
?But fortunately I was able to keep my head and hang in there ? although it was a struggle. My combined total on the front nine was 12-over while I was only one-over on the back nine on both days.
?So that pretty much shows that I never gave up and really hung in there.?
