Barbados set to tour Bermuda

Crystal Palace midfielder Paul Ifill could possibly grace the National Sports Centre (NSC) early next month should plans to have Barbados tour the Island come to fruition.

Ifill is one of three players in Barbados' national team, ranked 109th in the world, born in England with the other two being Doncaster Rovers striker Mark McCammon and Aldershot Town midfielder Lourie Soares.

Barbados also boast former Bristol City winger Gregory Goodridge, a former team-mate of Shaun Goater, among their ranks.

Some of Bermuda's current crop of senior national team players know the threat of Ifill all too well as his spectacular free-kick against the Island in the 2006 Digicel Cup earned the 'Bajan Pride' a vital point in a 1-1 stalemate in Barbados.

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) sources confirmed yesterday that plans are in the pipeline to have the Bajans tour the Island next month, with March 12 and 14 provisionally set aside as dates for the two matches to be staged at the NSC.

Barbados went undefeated on their previous three-match tour to Bermuda in 2004, edging past the national team 2-1 in their opening contest before thumping the same opponents, as well as then Premier Division champions Dandy Town, 4-0 to complete a clean sweep.

The Bajans' 4-0 thrashing of Bermuda also saw them become the first foreign team to win the Dudley Eve Trophy.

Should the proposed Barbados tour come off, the matches will fit in nicely with the Island's 2010 World Cup qualifying plans as it would present national coach Keith Tucker with another opportunity to have a thorough look at his squad in action against quality opposition.

Bermuda drew 1-1 with Cayman Island earlier this month at the NSC in the first leg of their World Cup qualifier and are scheduled to travel to the Caribbean for the crucial second leg at the end of March.

Barbados drew 1-1 against Dominica in the first leg of their World Cup qualifier also earlier this month with the two Caribbean Football Union (CFU) rivals set to battle it out in the second leg in Bridgetown, Barbados March 26.

Since Tucker's appointment as national coach last November Bermuda have faced off against the likes of St.Kitt's and Nevis, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands and more recently Major League Soccer (MLS) giants New England Revolution.
