Bascome has a Blast during victory parade

King of the rings: David Bascome signs autographs during the Baltimore Blast's victory parade yesterday. Bermudian Bascome collected his third Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) championship ring with the Blast this season and his havign second thoughts about retiring.

David Bascome was the toast of the town yesterday when his Baltimore Blast team took to the streets for a celebration parade after winning another Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) championship.

The Blast, who captured championships in 2003, 2004 and 2006, lifted the silverware by defeating La Raza de Monterrey 14-11 at the US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, last month.

"This is my third title with the Blast in the five years I have been here," said Bascome whose team held a celebration party in Baltimore.

"I have been playing this game for 17 years and spent 12 of them at Harrisburg Heat, where I didn't manage to win a trophy.

"So now winning three in five is a great feelings and no one can take them away from me."

The former Bermuda international had threatened to hang up his points before the start of the season to allow him to devote more time to his brainchild - the Island Soccer League (ISL)

But after tasting more success with the Blast, Bascome is not ready to make a decision on his future just yet.

"I was told to hold off until the beginning of next season," he said.

"But I would say this season was long for me. It would take a lot for me to return to the game.

"I still love it, but I also love developing players and watching them have the same opportunities I enjoyed."

Despite ending his outdoor career somewhat prematurely Bascome, 38, has no regrets about turning to the outdoor version of the game.

"I've been asked about the indoor game for years and have been told that I should have stayed outdoor," he said.

"I would have loved to continue with the outdoor game, but at the time things just did not work out with my papers. I needed to be in a professional environment at that time of my life, so indoor it was.

"It saved me at the time and I do not regret it. I will always push players to be in a professional environment, indoor or outdoor, and let them follow their own paths."

While laying claim to three MISL trophies, Bascome said the onus was not only about winning, but also giving back to the community.

"This franchise is not just involved with playing the game," said Bascome. "The Blast are heavily involved with development of soccer clubs in the area. "But the players, staff, and owner love to win."

The Blast finished with a 19-11 record in the regular season, finishing third in the league.

Bascome played only five regular season matches due to a knee injury, but returned to action to help Blast land the coveted trophy.

"The one memory that stands out the most for me was watching one of the fans cry with happiness," he said.

"It is amazing how much you touch people when they ride the waves with you."

"I played a role that was to help develop and lead by example. I had to adjust a lot due to my age and injury.

"But, I felt that I filled a void where it was needed and that was to bring experience to the team."

And with the MISL season concluded you can expect a few of the big names from the Blast to bless Bermuda's shores and support the ISL.

"A lot of the guys will be coming down such as Denison Cabral, Machelle Milwood, Danny Kelly.

"There will be many players looking to come to see the talent we have. Many scouts from both indoor and outdoor leagues will be visiting Bermuda."
