Bascome ready to Blast his way to title

David Bascome still has "all the drive of a 16-year-old" in his pursuit of a second Major Indoor Soccer League championship.

The veteran indoor player, who is setting up a professional league in Bermuda next summer, will attempt to repeat his success of 2004 as he goes into next week's play-offs with the Baltimore Blast.

The side, who will take on the Milwaukee Wave over two legs Saturday and Sunday week, finished comfortably with the top four to earn a place in the post-season.

"This is when the season really starts," said Bascome, who remains undecided whether he will play on after this season.

"We have got a squad full of talent so it is about how much we want this, how hungry we are. It is in our hands now.

"I am looking forward to it, I still had the same drive I did when I was a teenager, I am bubbly and I am looking forward to getting involved again.

"I think we have every chance."

Bascome, who reached the 1,000 point mark in the opening weeks of the season, is happy with the way he has played this season, despite his advancing years.

"I was aiming for a point a game and I have got that," said the perennial All-Star.

"I am pretty happy with the way my season has gone. I played the midfield role, just helping out the strikers where I have to but we some great finishers which makes it easier for me.

"There are times when I forget I am 36 and perhaps can't quite do all the things I used to when I was 21, but I do alright for myself still and I'd like to think I still play a useful role for the team."

The other inspiration for Bascome heading into the business end of the campaign is the memory of his close friend Paul Kitson.

It is for his memory that Bascome is going all out to win the title.

"His death affected me a lot," continued the national team veteran.

"We used to talk after almost every match and I miss that. I want to do this for him."

Last year John Barry Nusum ? who went on to win Rookie of the Year honours ? was in the play-offs with the Philadelphia KiXX with Bascome's Blast languishing outside the top four.

This year, the reverse is true with the KiXX languishing at the bottom of the table after a wretched campaign while the Blast, with a 17-13 record, comfortable moved into the top four.
