Basics let us down, complains coach Logie

Gus Logie was as damning following yesterday?s defeat to Namibia as he had been full of praise after the Kenyan struggle.

Pulling no punches, the coach ? who had dealt with the ignominy of the team canopy collapsing on him in the strong winds ? described the Bermuda performance as ?nothing to write home about?.

?It was a practice game and we played like it was practice game,? said Logie, who was more vocal than usual from the sidelines, particularly when the fielding became increasingly generous.

?There was no intensity, no urgency. We came off the high of the Kenya game and we clearly couldn?t reproduce it.

?I have to commend Lionel for his 72 but I think that was the only real highlight for us.

?It was certainly nothing to write home about and it was a disappointment for us.?

It wasn?t so much the result which so troubled Logie, more the manner of the defeat against what was a very inexperienced Namibia side.

?We struggled again at the top of the order which really is a problem for us that we can?t seem to get away from,? he continued.

?Players get into the 20s and then don?t seem to be able to go on from there. I was pleased that we batted out the 50 overs, and a lot of praise has to go to Lionel for his innings, but we still need more from the top of the order.

?We didn?t field well and that was disappointing. It was really the basics that let us down.

?We went from the Kenya game where we did a lot of the little things right and then the basics went in this game and if you are trying to compete at the next level, you have to be doing the basics right.

?I think fatigue did play a part but again that is something that we have to deal with because that is not an excuse we can use when we come out against the likes of India.?

In terms of individuals, Logie was obviously pleased with the contribution of Cann and the work of Kevin Hurdle, who like Kevin Tucker, had come back into the side following illness.

?I thought Kevin?s first spell was very impressive particularly given his illness early in the week,? said Logie.

?I was impressed with him in his first spell although not to so much when we brought him back in (he went for 14 in one over).?

As for Tucker ? who took two overs to find the stumps because of nerves ? and Stephen Outerbridge ? who looked unsure playing for his three ? Logie was diplomatic about the inexperienced youngsters.

?Kevin, I think, was pretty nervous,? said Logie.

?He found it tough early on although he did settle down in the end. He was a little bit wild at first but it was his first game and that is to be expected.

?As for Stephen, well I think it would be unfair to judge him on one game. He has come in here into the side and maybe didn?t look that comfortable. But, in time, I think we will see more of what he can do.

?We are looking at ways of bringing on some of the younger players and for some tours there are going to be senior guys who need a rest and that is when the other guys can get their chances.?

Namibia coach Andy Waller, a former Zimbabwe Test star, was full of praise for his team although not especially complimentary about the Bermudians.

?I was pleased for our guys, it was good for them to get a win,? he said.

?We had a lot of younger guys playing and I was impressed with the way they handled themselves.

?To be honest, I was disappointed we didn?t knock off the runs with just three of four wickets down. I was a little unhappy with the way some of our senior guys threw away the wickets ? it is a problem we have here.?

As for the opposition?

?For a team that qualified for the World Cup, I wasn?t very impressed with their fitness and certainly not their fielding,? he said earnestly.

?We played them in the warm-ups for Ireland and we knocked them off for less than 200 so I wasn?t surprised with the way they batted.

?I saw some of the game against Kenya and there were a couple of guys who put together good knocks but they didn?t seem to be able to manage it again.?

He added that for today?s encounter, he would be bringing in skipper Louis Burger, missing yesterday because of work commitments.
