Bassett hounds locals to help Bermuda to win
Marico Bassett scored an unbeaten 51 and Tre Govia and Kevon Fubler each took two wickets for five runs to inspire Bermuda?s Under 15 national team to a 71-run win over Presentation College in Trinidad yesterday.
Bermuda won the toss and batted first on a turning pitch and it didn?t take openers Terryn Fray (25) and Ryan Tyrell long to get on top of the bowling. The opening pair put on 67 runs for the first wicket and then Dante Richardson (12) and skipper Jordon DeSilva (38) added another 35 runs at the top of the order.
?They gave us a good start and overall our guys played really good cricket today,? commented Bermuda Cricket Board executive Allen Richardson, speaking from Trinidad last night.
Middle order bat Bassett then kept the scoreboard ticking over to keep Bermuda firmly on course to posting their highest total on tour so far.
Fubler also weighed in with a useful 11 not as Bermuda complied 191 for six in their allotted 40 overs.
?Our boys dealt with the pace bowling very well, but continued to struggle a bit against good spin,? Richardson said.
In reply, the host team struggled to cope with the touring team?s balanced bowling attack.
Aiding spinner Govia and seamer Fubler were Michael Hudson and Bassett, who each took two wickets for eight runs respectively and Marcus Johnson who seized two for 11 to help dismiss Presentation College for 120 runs with 30 balls to spare.
?We bowled very well on a wearing strip and reduced the number of wides,? Richardson said. ?And the spin of Govia and Johnson had the opposition?s batsmen wondering where the ball was going to go.?
Bermuda?s Under 15 national are due to take on El Dorado/Hillview in their final tour match in the Caribbean today.
Such is the confidence in the local camp, the Island?s youngsters have challenged their coaches and staff at the Frank Worrell Development Cricket Centre to a 20/20 contest tomorrow. They will then close out their tour by attending the opening day?s play of Trinidad?s Carib Beer International Challenge semi-final clash with Windward Islands at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre.
