Bean wins epic final

Cornell Bean became the Bermuda Amateur Junior Match Play champion yesterday after an epic final against rival Nick Jones at Port Royal which finished on the second play-off hole.

Three down at the half-way stage of the 36-hole battle and five down with only seven holes remaining, Jones then mounted a spectacular late comeback to win six straight holes and head to the 18th one up after an extraordinary reversal of fortunes.

But Bean maintained his composure, parring the final hole and watching Jones make bogey to take the match into extra holes.

Both parred the 37th hole, before a birdie on the next handed victory to a drained yet relieved Bean.

?It was an absolutely fantastic match ? the quality of the golf was very high,? said golf professional Eardley Jones, Nick?s father.

?Cornell played extremely well all day and looked to have it in the bag, but through a combination of Nick turning it on at the right time and Cornell choking a little bit towards the end, Nick managed to turn it around.?

In the consolation flight final Kenneth Leverock defeated Eric Bechter three and two.
