Bermuda athletes well placed to rack up Games medal haul

Bermuda may have slumped down the Island Games medal table yesterday, but a number of athletes have set up strong podium finishes for later in the competition.

Laser sailor Brett Wright is all but assured a gold in the Standard rig event, winning five of the six races to give him a perfect score of five with just one day of sailing left.

He has scored bullets in all but one of his his races, but the tenth he picked up in the second race has been discarded to give the veteran international sailor a lead of seven points ahead of the last day of sailing tomorrow.

Team-mate Sara Lane Pantovic, sitting in second place since Monday, will resume her attempt to match her ex-husband Wright?s achievements today.

The golfers appear at the forefront of the medal hunt after the first of their four rounds. Laura Robinson shot a 76 at the Dale Golf Club to take the lead by two shots in the individual competition, with Ebonie Burgess? 78 putting her in joint second. Susie Elton was in 7th with an 82 and Wendy Salvia, 29th with 111.

Following the success of Burgess and Robinson, it goes without saying that the ladies lead the team event ? nine shots clear of Isle of Wight.

The ladies move to Whalsay Golf Club today for round two, the venue where the men?s team worked their way into fourth place yesterday.

Andrew Fraser Hunt?s 75 was the lowest score among the team, leaving him in seventh place overnight with Jarryd Dillas (76, ninth), Sergio Edness (82, 24th) and Nick Mansell (87, 40th) also competing. The squash players, who have already picked up a team bronze, went in hot pursuit of individual medals yesterday with the two professionals Nick Kyme and James Stout comfortable reaching the quarter-final stage of the singles.

Kyme, ranked 66 in the world, dropped just six points in getting past Mark Tewkesbury of Gibraltar and Alex Phillips of the Isle of Wight while Stout disposed of Adam Stanger of Orkney and then a 3-2 win over Jamie Macauley of Shetland, winning the decider 9-6.

Laura Robinson, Denise Kyme and Liz Martin are all out of the medal competition in the singles.

In the volleyball, the men earned themselves a spot in the semi-final with a 3-1 victory over Guernsey on the final day of group competition. They will take on the winners of Aland and Faroe Islands today to fight for a place in the gold medal game. The women are left fighting for fifth or sixth place.

The ladies football team had their winning streak abruptly ended yesterday at the hands of the Faroe Islands. Having scored 13 unanswered goals in their opening fixtures, Vance Brown?s men were beaten 3-0 yesterday.

They remain in second in the table with two matches to go but face a must-win game with Aland today which should effectively decide the destination of the silver medal.

The Island?s lone archer Jeanne Butterfield couldn?t match the form she has shown in postal competitions in the past two years, finishing eighth in the women?s recurve final.

The 38-year-old gets her second and final shot at a medal in today?s 720 recurve final at the Clickimin Archer Field.

In the badminton singles, no Bermudian made it through to the quarter-finals although some of the doubles players survived the early rounds and live to fight another day.

Paul Lee beat Derek Manson of Orkney 2-1 before going down to Ragnar Rasmussen in the last 16. Mark Haugen was beaten by Kevin Smith from the host nation 0-2 and Lee Harrison was defeated by Frederik Elsner of Greenland.

In the ladies singles, Dianne Blais went on a walkover to Kimberley Clague of the Isle of Man.

In the pool, Darren Woods finished tenth in the 200m freestyle heats and Lara Loescher finished 15th in the 50m butterfly heats.
