Bermuda backs Singleton . . . and now Sal?'s Olympic dreams
Bermudian eyes will not only be on luger Patrick Singleton during the Winter Olympics which opened in Salt Lake City, Utah last night.
For although Singleton is the Island's only representative, a top medal hope also has strong Bermudian connections.
Jamie Sal?, whose father Gene is a foreman at Elite Electrical, is one half of the 2001 World Pairs Figure Skating Championship team.
The Canadian, who has visited the Island in the past, burst onto the scene with Pelletier at Skate Canada in 1998 and have since established themselves as one of the best pair teams in the world.
Both had previously achieved success at the national level as single skaters and at the world level as pairs skaters with different partners.
Together, they have enjoyed quick success winning handfuls of international medals including gold at the 2000 and 2001 Four Continents Championships, 2001 Grand Prix Final, and the 2001 World Championships in addition to three Canadian titles.
Tonight, watched rinkside by father Gene and his partner Edie Marshall who will unfurl a banner proclaiming `Bermuda loves Jamie and David', they will skate their Olympic short programme.
On Monday the duo will perform `Love Story' as their long, hoping to become the first Canadian Olympic pairs champions since Barbara Wagner and Robert Paul won at Squaw Valley in 1960.
Sal? was laid low by the flu at home in Edmonton last week but has full recovered.
